Since it has been just over one year since the publication of our book, Mindfulness-Based Supervision and Mentoring: Using an Embodied Dialogue to Support Learning and Reflection, we would like to mark this important milestone with brief reflections on our experience of hosting launch and learn events over the past 12 months.
Reflections on our first year since publication
In our introduction in the book, we describe how our particular framework and approach to mindfulness-based supervision (MBS) has grown out of many years of collaboration and dialogue- our work rests on the shoulders of our own supervisors and mentors, leaders in the mindfulness-based field, and those within the broader field of supervision, as well as being shaped through our encounters with peers, supervisors and potential supervisors who attend our MBS training, and all our connections with supervisees through our own practice of MBS.
One of our hopes in writing the book was to make a contribution to the field, to open up the dialogue around MBS, to share our passion, and to uplift its value. So, with this in mind, the publication of the book in May 2025 became the catalyst for a series of launch and learn events between June 2025 and July 2026. This kicked off with a book launch event hosted by the Mindfulness Network, a four part series book study group, offering a workshop at the International Conference on Mindfulness-Asia Pacific (ICM-AP) 2025, offering a keynote talk at the Sussex Mindfulness Centre (SMC) annual conference with the theme of the power of compassion to transform, and concluded with an event hosted by Oxford Mindfulness Foundation for their members, with a focus on supervisees and supporting them to get the most out of their supervision.
For the book study group, we used the Connect-Extend-Challenge model to guide our learning and we can see how this whole year has supported us in these three ways:
- Connect: feeling the resonance when we dialogue with others around our shared passion for MBS and commitment for ongoing reflection and learning
- Extend: projects like the SMC conference keynote allowed us to broaden the application of our framework beyond the more traditional supervisory/mentoring process
- Challenge: we continue to explore our blind spots, lean into not knowing, and embrace assimilation learning- these feedback loops that nourish our learning and growth both personally and around the work of MBS.
